Short Answer: Moss grows very slowly

 

Depending on species, some live moss such as commonly used Leucobryum glaucum grows very slowly in in-door and closed terrariums. With more light and colder environment, moss grow at a significantly faster rate. The further moss grow away from its surface, the slower their growth will be.

Short Answer: Well-lit in-door light

 

For longer lifespan, vibrant and fluffier moss, it is recommended to expose the moss to 3W dedicated indoor light such as TerraLight (preferably white light). Never expose live moss terrariums to direct sunlight as it can easily overheat the moss.

Short Answer: Keep below 30 °C

 

Moss likes cold environment and afraid of heat. As long as it's not overly warm above 30°C, they should do fine for years. A more reliable but luxury method of maintaining moss health for long term is air-conditioned environment with optimum temperature of 25°C.

Short Answer: The microclimate is self sustaining

 

In air tight vessel, most of the moisture and air will be trapped and circulate within. There is no need to open them unless for watering purpose and they can go for months without watering. In loose cap vessel, condensation may be less as excessive moisture will leave the vessel. However, they need more frequent watering up to once a week.

Short Answer: Moss does not have roots

 

Moss does not have real roots functioning for water transportation. Their roots, known as “Rhizoids” were meant only for surface attachment. Therefore, their leaves cells are the only place they carry water. It is safe to cut and trim them into any desired thickness.

Short Answer: Never overwater

 

Moss are usually fluffy, moist to touch, vibrant and darker in green when they were exposed to the right humidity. Mist spray with our spray bottle lightly only the moss surface when they are slightly drier, usually in 3 weeks to 1 month time. Never overwater them and never leave them dry out. The substrate / soil should look moist and dark too.

Short Answer: Moss lifespan strongly depends on environment

 

In cold environment, moss can easily live on and flourish for years. The warmer the environment gets, the shorter its lifespan. Live moss will gradually turn yellow when environment gets too warm and their average lifespan will be reduced to 3 months.

Short Answer: Moss leaves absorb everything

 

Moss don't purify air as much as you'd imagine, especially when it's left in sealed system. If your air carry lots of pollutants, they may easily get absorbed into moss leaves and moss will get sick soon after.

Short Answer: Condensation is a sign of life and a way to appreciate live moss terrariums

 

Condensation occurs especially when environmental temperature is colder than the temperature within the microclimate of glass vessel. It may also occur when moss actively make food under good lighting or rainy day where there is a difference in air pressure.

Short Answer: Spray with clean water

 

It is strongly recommended to water the moss with our "Moss Potion". The short term substitute for "Moss Potion" can be FILTERED / non-chlorinated water.

Short Answer: Keep in-door with good air circulation

 

Subtle air circulation is important to lower down the overall room temperature. It is one of the more affordable methods in keeping terrariums cool for moss to live.

Short Answer: Keep terrariums closed at all times

 

All our live moss terrariums should always be closed to trap the moisture. Moss dry up very quickly within hours if left in opened and airy environment. If you are confident about maintaining consistent humidity, you can try opening to leave them open and observe further.

Short Answer: Moss responds to environment

 

Moss can change colour due to environmental stress / heat / pollution. At times, they turn silvery or yellowish to reflect heat. Due to air pollution, they may turn white to reflect heat / hibernate and stop making food.
